François Archambault's The Leisure Society has been winning rave reviews here and all over Canada, but it's only receiving its first public outing in Montreal and in English now. 

Good thing, too, since it's actually quite good.

From my windowless office, something has always felt a little strange about prepping for a summer festival when there is still two feet of snow on the ground. All the talk of tiki lounges, beer tents and sangria never seems right. Nevertheless, as of the date of publication of this feature, a little less than three months until the start of the 22nd edition of the St-Ambroise Montreal FRINGE Festival.

Part IV: ArtGrant!

Last year at ArtCamp! Astra’s piece was a sort of “choose your own baptism” in the lake at dawn.  Patrons who wanted to participate filled out a form the evening before where they chose what the baptism was an act of: purification, praise, aspiration, healing, or goal setting.  Participants were invited to circle as many symbols of the divine from a list including: Jesus Christ, Buddha, Mother Earth, Kali, Kayne West, their ancestors or they could fill one in of their choosing.  Finally they could share any words or prayers that they wanted to include.  I know it’s all a bit sacrilegious.  When I came up with the framework of the piece it wasn’t my intention to offend anyone.  I wanted to provide participants with a fun but moving experience.  Plus, I always wanted to be baptized in a lake.

Edgy Women Festival lineup

Press release: The 19th edition of the EDGY WOMEN festival runs from March 15th to April 1st 2012, exploring feminist issues through avant-garde artistic events. Alongside a performance series, the 2012 edition features professional-level workshops, public discussions, parties, a retrospective screening, an unusual hockey match, and a zombie book launch!

The performance series involves four productions.

News: ANA seduces Scotland

The initial reviews of Imago's ANA, a coproduction with Scotland's Traverse Theatre, are in and at least one of them - in the Herald - is positive. Reviewer Neil Cooper concludes with, "If we've come full circle and are tapping into a sense of post-modern internationalism, this is a thrilling start."

Musical Shows Aplenty at QDF Spring Calendar Launch

Friedrich Nietzsche quipped that “Without music, life would be a mistake”. Had he been channeled to the 8th quarterly Quebec Drama Festival Calendar Launch at the Rialto last night, he would have been in a quandary. The 18 forthcoming local productions showcased featured 7 that were musical, no mistake, but the famous woman-hating philosopher would have had to observe that dozens of  talented ladies that made up the bulk of the ensembles. 

Anyway, this is all hypothetical because God has announced that “Nietzsche is dead.”
