Montreal once again manages to pack one more festival into the calendar with MPROV: The 6th Annual Montreal Improv Festival. For the sixth year running, Montreal will play host to some of the wildest spontaneity that the city and the country has to offer.
This year’s festival will mark the premiere of MPROV in its new home, The Montreal Improv Theatre. And that’s not the only milestone. The year’s MPROV will feature 11 different troupes, a record number for the festival. It will also feature a record number of local troupes. 7 Montreal-based troupes in all will be featured in this year’s fest. If you’re really fast with math then you already know that 4 Canadian troupes fill out the MPROV line-up. Yep, this is also the first year that MPROV goes 100% Can Con.
Some of the highlights this year will include Toronto’s Egg Zeppelin presenting both improvised scenes and music, the return of Winnipeg’s Outside Joke and Toronto’s Sex T Rex, and the humorously regulated Standard and Practices from Toronto. Local acts include the legendary Uncalled For, The Bitter End presenting another in their series of improvised movies in one specific genre, the non-verbal improvisation of Venezuela, the very much verbal and bilingual Improspection, the city’s longest running comedy troupe, On The Spot Improv, Montreal Improv performing in their home venue and, for those who prefer their improv outdoors and up close, Improv Ronin will be presenting an improvised walking tour of the plateau (tours leave from the theatre at 2 PM October 15 and 16, weather permitting).
For those who would like to try their hand at improv, all of the out-of-town troupes will be offering improv workshops.
MPROV will be presenting shows every night from Oct. 12-15 in the Montreal Improv Theatre at 8 PM with 10 PM late shows Oct.13-15.
Tickets are $8 or $12 for a double-header.
