Review: Adopt This! (Fringe 2011)

Reviewed by Valerie Cardinal

Adopt This! is the hilarious and heartfelt account of Dan Bingham’s dysfunctional life. Adopted as a baby by a couple who divorced 18 months later, Dan had to face obstacles such as a strict Catholic mother, her abusive overweight boyfriend, a pathological liar father and lots of teenage mischief. Later, he meets his biologic mother and her family, a gang of hard-drinking, hard-partying Scotsmen.

It’s a stand-up routine with an interesting theme. Dan Bingham has put together a show with a lot of heart and a lot of good, strong laughs. Bingham can find the funny in even the most depressing situation, from dealing with his mom’s asshole boyfriend to setting cars on fire as an angry teen.

“After this show, you’re going to need a smoke,” he warns the audience near the beginning. The tale of his life is so surreal it leaves you a little in shock. However, Bingham finds a way to make it absolutely hilarious. The girl sitting next to me was in tears of laughter only twenty minutes in.

My only criticism is that it ends too quickly, or at least that’s how it feels. Bingham is captivating, and you want to hear more about his strange life. This man knows how to keep an audience interested in what he has to say. Adopt This! is a well-executed, must see one-man show for those who like their comedy with a good story, a little sadness and a big heart.

  1. I'm happy to see Dan Bingham getting the recognition he deserves. He's one of Montreal's best comics.
